If you must pick a song that looks backward on your life, how about Frank Sinatra's My Way? "I've lived a life that's full, I traveled each and every highway. But more. Much more than this. I did it my way." The tune is slow, but makes no apologies. Nor do the lyrics. The song addresses the regrets, but insists that the singer remained true to himself with every choice he made. Yes, My Way is a much better symbol of looking back on the past year than Auld Lang Syne.
Isn't that really what you want out of life? You know you can't win every battle. Each year, you'll say hello to new friends, goodbye to old ones. Opportunities will appear and disappear. But in the end, all you can be is true to your own self. When the end comes, you'll face it alone, alone with your conscience, alone with your list of failures and successes. Face your life with pride. Embrace your mistakes as well as your high notes.
In my second historical romance, Kismet's Revenge, my character Antoinetta, discusses a conversation she once had with her uncle: "Ahmed often said life is a road with many forks. Sometimes you take the right path, sometimes the wrong. The trouble is, you're never certain which path is the right path until long after you've passed the crossroads. All you can do is place your faith in Kismet, the goddess of fate. She alone knows where your path will lead and will guide your way."
Wherever you traveled this year, good choices or bad, remember you did it Your Way. May 2012 bring us all joy, love, and most important of all, peace.
